Handmade with love in Florence Perfumeries
Già nel 1381 è documentato come i Domenicani di Santa Maria Novella vendessero l'acqua di rose come disinfettante, usato soprattutto nei periodi di epidemie. I frati coltivavano le piante medicamentose (i semplici, da cui deriva il nome del giardino dei Semplici) in un orto attiguo, distillavano erbe e fiori, preparavano essenze, elisir, pomate, balsami. Il giardino dei semplici riforniva principalmente la più vicina e gemella Farmacia di San Marco anch'essa fondata e gestita dai frati domenicani.
L'attuale profumeria risale al 1612, quando ancora svolgeva anche l'attività di spezieria. Rinomata in tutta Europa, ricevette dal granduca Ferdinando II de' Medici il titolo di Fonderia di Sua Altezza Reale nel 1659, durante la direzione di Fra' Angiolo Marchissi. Nel XVIII secolo i suoi prodotti venivano esportati fin nelle Indie e in Cina.
Oggi è ritenuta una delle attività commerciali più antiche di tutta Europa, attiva da oltre quattro secoli. Nonostante le soppressioni ottocentesche del convento, rimase attiva grazie a fra' Damiano Beni e nel 1866 divenne di proprietà comunale e fu presa in affitto dal nipote Cesare Augusto Stefani, i cui eredi gestiscono ancor oggi l'attività.
Interni
L'antica "spezieria", oggi non più farmacia, bensì profumeria ed erboristeria, si trova in un vero e proprio ambiente monumentale, con decorazioni e arredi antichi, risalenti a varie epoche. Conserva anche una pregevole collezione di materiale scientifico, quali termometri, mortai, bilance, misurini, eccetera, oltre ai pregiati vasi da farmacia dal Seicento al Novecento.
Already in 1381 it is documented how the Dominicans of Santa Maria Novella sold rose water as a disinfectant, used above all in periods of epidemics. The friars cultivated medicinal plants (the simple ones, from which the name of the Semplici garden derives) in an adjoining vegetable garden, distilled herbs and flowers, prepared essences, elixirs, ointments and balms. The simple garden mainly supplied the nearest and twin Pharmacy of San Marco, also founded and managed by the Dominican friars.
The current perfumery dates back to 1612, when it still also carried out the apothecary business. Renowned throughout Europe, it received the title of Foundry of His Royal Highness from Grand Duke Ferdinando II de' Medici in 1659, during the direction of Fra' Angiolo Marchissi. In the 18th century its products were exported as far as the Indies and China.
Today it is considered one of the oldest commercial activities in all of Europe, active for over four centuries. Despite the nineteenth-century suppressions of the convent, it remained active thanks to Fra Damiano Beni and in 1866 it became municipal property and was rented by his nephew Cesare Augusto Stefani, whose heirs still manage the business today.
Interior
The ancient "spezieria", today no longer a pharmacy, but rather a perfumery and herbalist's shop, is located in a truly monumental environment, with ancient decorations and furnishings dating back to various eras. It also preserves a valuable collection of scientific material, such as thermometers, mortars, scales, measuring cups, etc., as well as valuable pharmacy jars from the seventeenth to the twentieth century.
